What is Role-Playing?
Role-playing games, often abbreviated as RPGs, are a collective experience where several people come together to live and build a story together.
Imagine a mix between a movie, a board game, and a choose-your-own-adventure story.
Each participant embodies a character and freely decides what they do, what they say, and how they react to events.
An adventure guided by a Game Master
The game is led by a Game Master, or GM.
He is simultaneously the narrator, referee, and director of the adventure. He describes the world around you, interprets the characters you meet, and develops the story according to your decisions.
"You arrive at the gates of an old fortress. Two armored guards block your path. What do you do?"
From there, anything is possible.
You can try to convince the guards, look for another entrance, distract them, climb the ramparts… or imagine a solution that the Game Master himself hadn’t thought of.
That's precisely what makes role-playing so rich: you're free to try.
And what about the dice in all of this?
When the outcome of an action is uncertain, rules and dice help determine what happens.
Is your character trying to jump over a precipice?
To lie to a merchant?
To decipher a mysterious manuscript?
To fight a creature?
A roll of the dice can decide your success… or cause a failure that will sometimes lead to totally unexpected situations.
But the goal of RPGs is not necessarily to "win".
The goal is to create a memorable story; sometimes it is more interesting to let your character die in a dramatic scene than to want to save him at all costs.

Do you need to know how to play a character?
No way.
You don't need to be an actor, know complicated rules, or have any prior experience with role-playing.
You can speak like your character if you want:
"I will not let you into this city!"
Or simply explain what he does:
"I'm trying to convince the guard to let us through."
Both ways of playing work perfectly.
The Game Master is responsible for ensuring the rules are followed and making sure the experience runs smoothly for you.
A story that will only exist once
One part can take you absolutely anywhere:
Explore a fantasy kingdom, solve a mystery, survive in a space station, negotiate with a king, confront monsters, or simply try to get your companions out of a situation that has become completely out of control.
But what makes role-playing games special is above all the people around the table.
Because each player makes their own choices, two groups facing exactly the same adventure can experience radically different stories.
You are not watching history unfold.
You are part of it.
